This study was performed to characterize historical paper artefacts from 16th to 19th century from Chungbuk National University Museum (CNUM) in Korea. In order to know the fiber composition, surface features and fiber orientation in historic paper artefacts, LM, SEM and EDX analysis observations were applied. Based on tested results, it was concluded that Korean historic papers from 16 to 19th century were made of paper mulberry fibers called dak, which had 2.79-16.03 m of fiber lengthes and $4.5-26{\mu}m$ of lumen widthes, and they were relatively well preserved. According to EDX analysis, the examined papers differed to the contents of inorganics. High contents of S, Si, Ca, P and Al refer to use fillers, such as gypsum, clay and talc, for paper artifacts. In particular, half of samples contained some amounts of S, Cl and Fe. Since those inorganics might be potentially harmful for the paper permanency, therefore it should be considered special restoration measures from the preservation point of view.

In this study, the papers were examined for their mor phology of fibers by Image analysis. The stained fibers were placed on the slide glass and their fiber length and width was measured with 20 times magnification.
In general fibers in historic paper artefacts can be identified by the anatomy of fiber and structural features, such as parenchyma cells, fibers and vessels, which may be presented in the pulp. The measurement results give us some information about the origin of species, pulping method and its deterioration. Comparison with the refer ence material was performed very carefully wi出 atten tion to morphological changes.
The study mainly focuses on raw-materials of 出e objects.

Examination". Museum's identification number is Chungbuk 2169 (Sample 5).
Object 1 : This sample(Sample 1, Chungbuk refer ence) was taken from paper shoes of Mr. Lim, Kyung-Back's tomb(17th century, Chosun Dynasty).
Six artefacts from the collections of CNUM9 were selected for the study. Together eighteen samples from paper shoe, books and scroll were taken.
Lee, Gyoe-Heung, '. The artefact is dated from AD 1884 (King Kojong, Chosun Dynasty). The paper color is bright.
The stained material was observed by means of the light microscope (Olympus BX 50). The camera Olympus attached to the microscope with trans mitted light and color Kodak film ISO 100 were used. The photographs were magnified 40 x, 100 x, 200 x and 400 x.
showed in Table 1. The paper contained of 13 inorganic fillers. Except Sample 3A1 (inner layer), all papers were similar inorganic compositions, high S, Ca, Si and P, while Sample 3A1 (inner layer) contained 62.
The paper color is bright. The paper is composed to long and very well preserved fibers. That sample contains lit tle amounts of inorganic fillers as shown in Fig.
