안면근은 안면의 표정근(muscles of expression)과 저작근(muscles of mastication)으로 나눌 수 있으며, 흔히 안면 표정근을 안면근(facial muscles)이라 부른다(Fig. 1)1).
첫째, 두개강내 병변(central or intracranial region)으로는 혈맥 관계 이상(vascular abnormalities), 퇴행성 중추신경계 질환(central nervous system degenerative diseases), 두개강내 종양(tumors of the intracranial cavity), 선천성 기형(congenital abnormalities and agenesis) 등이 있고, 둘째 측두골 병변(temporal bone region)으로는 감염(bacterial and viral infections), 진주종(cholesteatoma), 외상(trauma), 측두골 골절(longitudinal and horizontal fractures of the temporal bones), 종양(tumors invading the middle ear, mastoid, and facial nerve), 의인성(iatrogenic causes) 등이 있으며, 셋째, 두개골외 병변(extracranial region)으로는 이하성 악성종양(malignant tumors of the parotid gland), 외상성, 의인성(iatrogenic causes), 하악골 가지부(mandibular ramus), 익상부, 피부 등의 악성 종양 등을 들 수 있다.
