결혼 이주민들이 이주 후에 경험하는 사회문화적 과도기는 무엇인가? 결혼 이주민의 대부분은 젊고 건강하다. 이들은 이주 후 그 사회의 한 구성원으로서 적응하기 위해 새로운 문화와 언어, 가치관 등의 사회문화적 생활환경을 공유하며 점차 이민국 사람들의 태도, 감정을 수용하고 이들과 통합되는 사회문화적 과도기를 경험하게 된다(Yang, 2011). 이러한 과정에서 이주자들은 새로운 사회에 빠르게 적응하기 위해 이전과 다른 생활행태를 선택하는 경우가 많은데, 많은 경우 이렇게 선택한 생활행태가 건강행위에 부정적인 영향을 미쳐 건강수준을 악화시키고 만성질환 유병률을 증가시키고 있다(Kim & Moon, 2011; Scheppers, Dongen, Dekker, Geertzen, & Dekker, 2006).
이민자들이 적응하는 과정에서 건강수준이 악화되고 만성질환의 유병률이 증가하는 이유는 무엇인가? 이러한 과정에서 이주자들은 새로운 사회에 빠르게 적응하기 위해 이전과 다른 생활행태를 선택하는 경우가 많은데, 많은 경우 이렇게 선택한 생활행태가 건강행위에 부정적인 영향을 미쳐 건강수준을 악화시키고 만성질환 유병률을 증가시키고 있다(Kim & Moon, 2011; Scheppers, Dongen, Dekker, Geertzen, & Dekker, 2006). 이는 이민자들이 적응하는 과정에서 새로운 사회의 생활방식과 사회문화적 환경 및 물리적 환경요인에 노출되어 불가피하게 습득된 일련의 행위, 즉 신체활동의 감소, 전통적인 생활습관보다 높은 칼로리 식이 섭취, 흡연행위, 알코올섭취 등 부정적 건강행위를 따르기 때문이다(Kim, Lim, & Chung, 2012). 그 결과 새로운 사회에 적응하는 이주 초기에 신체 변화가 많이 나타나며 결과적으로 불건강 상태의 원인이 되고 있는 것이다.
