제주를 찾는 관광객수가 최근 3년 내내 두자릿수 증가율을 보인 배경은? 한국에서 가장 큰 섬인 제주도는 60만 명의 적은 인구를 지니고 있으나 세계자연유산등재, 세계 7대 자연경관선정 등 학술적 가치가 인정되면서 세계적인 관광지로 인지도를 높이게 되었다. 이와 더불어 저가항공 제주노선 신규취항, 제주 올레길 활성화, 중국관광객 증가 등으로 인해 제주를 찾는 관광객수는 최근 3년 내내 두 자릿수의 높은 증가율을 보였고 2013년에 관광객 1000만 명을 돌파하면서 제주경제 활성화의 견인차 역할을 하고 있다. 일본을 뛰어넘을 만큼 성장한 중국 경제와 중국의 관광 정책의 변화로 인한 중국인 관광객 증가는 최근 제주 관광에 가장 큰 영향력을 미치고 있다.
