본 연구는 시민들이 일상생활에서 마주하는 문제들을 그 탐색행위의 특성에 기반하여 범주화함으로써 시민들의 정보문제 해결에 실질적인 도움이 되는 정보 서비스를 탐색하기 위하여 실시되었다. 우선, 심층면담을 통해 시민들이 일상생활에서 직면한 문제에 대한 핵심 키워드를 추출하였다. 추출된 키워드는 정보탐색행위의 특성에 따라 6가지 문제 영역(취미, 법률, 시사, 교육, 건강, 경제)으로 범주화하였으며, 범주화 결과의 타당성을 위해 설문을 통해 각 범주의 선호 정보원의 차이에 대하여 통계 분석을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 문제 영역 간에 선호 정보원의 차이가 검증되었으며, 이를 통해 취미, 법률, 시사, 교육, 건강, 경제로 구분한 6가지 문제 영역 구분이 어느 정도 타당성을 가지고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구는 이러한 결과를 기반으로 기존의 주제별 정보 서비스에 대한 재검토 필요성을 제기하며, 문제 중심 정보 서비스로의 전환 가능성을 논의하였다.
