강릉지역 팔경의 내용 및 분포에 관한 연구

본고에서는 여러 문헌에 흩어진 강릉지역의 팔경을 수집하고, 팔경과 역사문화와의 관계 팔경의 지역적 분포 경관구성 요소 및 내재적 의미를 다각도로 분석 및 해석하였다. 강릉지역의 팔경은 고려에서 근현대까지 오랜 시간 동안 축적 확장되어 왔으며, 단순히 자연경관의 아름다움뿐 아니라 이 지역을 배경으로 한 역사적인 사실과 그 정서를 반영하고 있다. 또한, 강릉지역 팔경의 형식과 분포를 종합하여 볼 때, 가장 많은 형식을 차지하는 것은 소상유사형(瀟湘類似型)이다. 그 중 반복적으로 나타나는 '저녁밥 짓는 연기'나 '고기 잡기' 등은 당시 강릉지역민들의 생활상을 보여주고 있으며, 이는 마을단위로 이루어진 팔경이라는 사실을 말한다. 강릉지역의 팔경은 넓게는 시(市) 전체, 좁게는 누정(亭)까지 다양한 범위에 분포되어 있다. 대부분의 팔경은 현재 강릉시의 동쪽, 그리고 강동면과 구정면이 접하는 지역에 몰려있다. 강릉 지역의 팔경이 대부분 이곳에 분포되어 있는 상황으로 볼 때, 이 지역이 강릉경관의 핵심을 차지하고 있음을 말해준다. 강릉지역 팔경은 자연요소 60%, 인문요소 36%, 기타 4%로 나타났으며 자연요소에서는 대상 그 자체의 아름다움을, 인문요소와 기타에서는 대상 속에 담긴 전설이나 역사를 담고 있다. 팔경이 표현하는 경관들은 별개의 대상이 아니다. 남대천과 죽도봉, 군선강과 풍호 등 하나의 풍경이 되었다. 또한 신라의 화랑의 이야기가 얽힌 풍호, 군선강 등은 강릉지역의 대표적인 역사경관이 되었으며, 강릉지역의 팔경은 견조도, 한송정, 한송사 등 현재는 존재하지 않는 강릉의 유적 및 전통경관을 유추해 볼 수 있는 중요한 기초자료가 될 것으로 판단된다. 결론적으로 강릉지역의 팔경은 미적대상인 동시에 역사 문화적 장소이고 더 나아가 심상적(心象的) 공간으로 남아 있음을 알 수 있다.
