This study aims to analyze which subsidiary configuration strategy is more effective under uncertainty especially technology base multinational corporations (henceforth MNCs). In previous studies real option theory scholars argue that high breadth subsidiary configuration is most effective strategy because that provides flexibility to MNCs global network. In this study I want unveil more various types of uncertainty such as technology and learning uncertainty which are more important for technology base firm and further more examine the effect of MNCs subsidiary configuration on firm R&D performance each uncertainty case. Empirical study is performed by negative binominal model based on Japanese 108 multinational corporations. The result shows that under technology uncertainty, high breadth subsidiary configuration is better for firm R&D performance but under learning uncertainty high depth subsidiary configuration is better. Thus, the effects of MNCs subsidiary configuration on firm value can differ by types of uncertainty.

제안 방법

기업의 연구개발 성과를 확인하기 위해서는 기업의 특허성과를 종속변수로 선정하였다. 선행연구에서 기업의 특허 수는 기업의 기술적인 성과를 측정하는 변수로 자주 활용되고 있으며[Guellecand Van Pottelsbe rghe de la Paotterie, 2001], 많은 연구에서 기업의 기술적 역량의 지표로 활용되어 왔다[Hall et al.
학습 불확실성을 측정하기 위해서는 학습 능력과 관련이 높은 기업의 자회사경험(subsidiaryage)과 흡수역량(absorptive capacity)을 기준으로 하여 2×2 매트릭스를 설정하여 전체 기업을 네 가지의 경우로 구분하였다. 즉 자회사 경험과 흡수역량 두 가지 변수가 모두 높은 경우는 기업의 학습 성과가 높고 두 가지 경우가 모두 낮은 경우는 학습 성과가 낮을 것으로 예측이 가능하기 때문에 이 두 가지의 경우는 학습 불확실성이 낮은 상황으로 볼 수 있다.

대상 데이터

기술과 학습의 불확실성 하에서 다국적 기업의 연구개발 자회사배치 전략과 연구개발 성과를 알아보기 위한 본 연구를 위해 일본의 다국적기업 중 전기전자, 정밀기계, 화학 등의 기술집약적 다국적 기업을 그 대상으로 하였다.
최근 저성장 돌파와 신성장 동력 확보가 중요한 이슈로 대두되고 있는 우리 경제 상황에서 일본기업의 연구개발 전략은 관심을 가지고 연구해 볼 주제라 할 수 있다. 이를 위해 도요게이자이 데이터뱅크(ToyokeizaiData Bank) 해외진출 총람에 게재된 전기전자, 정밀기계, 화학 관련 기업 415개를 검토하였고 이들 기업의 해외진출 자회사의 사업목적을 검토하여 최종 108개의 기업을 선정하였다. 표본의 상세한 구성은 [Table 1]에 제시하였다.

데이터처리

본 연구에서 사용된 변수의 기술통계량과 상관관계를 [Table 2]에 제시하였다. 기업의 특허 성과를 종속변수로 사용하는 경우 좌측 단절된 분포의 특성을 반영하여 음이항 회귀분석(Negative Binominal Regression)을 활용한다[Almeida et al., 2002]. 데이터는 STATA를 활용하여 분석하였다.

이론/모형

기술 불확실성은 Folta[1998]의 연구에서와 같이 개별 산업의 대표기업 10개를 선정 하여 각 기업의 예측되지 않는 주가변동성을 Garch(1, 1)모델을 통해 측정하였다. 이러한 방법은 기술기업의 주가 변동성을 통해 기술의 변동성을 간접적으로 측정하는 방식이라고 할 수 있다.

성능/효과

본 연구에서는 실물옵션이론을 근간으로 기업이 직면하고 있는 다양한 불확실성의 종류 중에서도 기술기반 기업의 지식성과와 관련성이 높은 기술 불확실성과 학습 불확실성에 주목하였다. 연구결과 기술 불확실성과 학습 불확실성은 실제로 존재하며 기업의 성과에도 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다. 또한 다국적 기업의 글로벌 네트워크를 통한 지식습득의 효과를 높일 수 있는지를 확인하기 위하여 불확실성 하에서 자회사의 배치전략의 효과를 분석하였다.

후속연구

또한 실무적으로는 다국적 기업의 해외진출 시 개별적인 사업 목표와 함께 전체 자회 사 구성과 네트워크를 하나의 통합된 시각에서 바라볼 필요가 있으며 특히 기술기반 다국적 기업이 직면하고 있는 불확실성의 종류와 성격에 따라 다르게 설계되어야 함을 시사하고 있다.
그러나 기업이 직면하고 있는 불확실성은 기술과 학습 불확실성만 존재하는 것이 아니기에 연구의 한계점을 지닐 수밖에 없을 것이다. 향후연구에서는 환율(foreign exchange), 정부정책(government policy) 등과 같은 외생적 불확실성과 조직관성(organization inertia), 조직문화(organizational culture) 같은 보다 내생적 불확실성 등 보다 다양한 불확실성 하에서의 기업의 의사결정과 성과에 대하여 연구하는 것이 필요할 것이다.

	기술 선진국에 배태되어 있는 기술을 효과적으로 확보하기 위해 R&D 센터, 자회사 등 여러 곳의 형태로 진출하고 보다 집중하는 것이 효과적일 수 있는 이유는 무엇인가?	일반적으로 신기술의 확보가 가능한 기술선진국가의 수는 매우 제한적인 경우가 많다. 또한 한 국가에 배태되어 있는 지식은 하나의 기업이나 하나의 조직에 국한되어 있기 보다는 대학, 연구소, R&D 센터 등 다양한 형태로 존재하게 된다. 따라서 기술 선진국에 배태되어 있는 기술을 효과적으로 확보하기 위해서는 여러 국가에 진출하여 유연성을 확보하기 보다는 하나의 조직보다는 R&D 센터, 자회사 등 여러 곳의 형태로 진출하고 보다 집중하는 것이 효과적일 수 있다.
