피해 학생이 사이버 폭력를 당해도 외부에서는 알 수 없는 이유는? Lim, 2006). 신체적 폭행이나 협박과 같이 오프라인에서 발생하는 학교폭력은 외부에 드러나기 쉬운 형태인 반면, 온라인에서 발생하는 사이버 폭력은 괴롭힘을 당한 증거가 스마트폰에만 담겨 있어 피해 학생이 어떤 피해를 당하는지에 대해 외부에서는 확인할 수 없다. 또한 가해자와의 접촉이 없을 때는 상대적으로 괴로움이 덜했던 오프라인에서 발생하는 폭력과 달리, 사이버 언어폭력은 휴대이동성이 특징인 모바일을 통해 발생하면서 시간이나 공간의 제약 없이 괴롭힘을 당할 수 있으므로 그 피해 수준이 매우 심각하다(Electronic Newspaper, 2011).
