납염 또는 납방염(蜡防染)은 국가 별로 어떻게 명명되었는가? 방염을 통해 문양을 만드는 염색 기법은 고대인도, 이집트뿐 아니라, 인도네시아, 중국, 일본 등 세계 여러 지역에서 행하여 왔다. 인도네시아의 친츠 바틱(chintz batik)은 국제 공용어로 이란에서는 칼람카리(kalamkari)라고 하고, 중국, 일본에서는 화포(花布), 인화포(印花布)(Lee, 2008) 등으로 명명되었다. 현대에 이르러서는 납염 또는 납방염(蜡防染)이라고 하며, 파라핀(paraffin)염이라고 불리고 있다(Park & Ra, 2014).
