본 연구는 농촌여성노인의 베트남며느리 뒷바라지 체험의 의미와 본질을 탐색하기 위하여 van Manen의 해석학적 현상학 연구방법을 사용하였다. 연구 참여자는 베트남며느리와 동거하는 농촌지역 여성노인 8명을 대상으로 하였으며, 자료수집은 면대면 심층면접과 관찰을 통해 이루어졌다. 연구결과 8개의 본질적 주제와 28개의 주제가 도출되었다. 농촌지역 여성노인들은 베트남며느리를 맞아 아들가정을 지속적으로 지원해 주어야만 했고, 한국과 베트남의 문화 차이로 인한 높은 스트레스를 경험하고 있었다. 이상의 연구결과는 실용적이고 포괄적인 지역사회 간호 중재 개발에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 여겨지며, 향후 모든 가족 구성원의 관점에 기초하여 베트남며느리, 아들 및 손자 관점에서의 경험을 탐구하는 후속 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다.

참여자들, 즉 농촌여성노인은 혼기를 놓친 아들을 위해 어떻게 하는가? 그러나 1990년 이후 우리나라의 성비불균형의 심화, 한국사회 전반의 고학력화 및 여성들의 경제활동 증가로 만혼과 혼자 사는 여성들이 증가하는 반면, 농촌지역의 상대적인 경제력 약화는 농촌에 거주하는 남성들이 결혼 적령기를 지나고서도 배우자를 찾지 못하는 현상을 야기시켰다[2]. 실제 농촌지역 여성노인들은 혼기를 놓친 아들과 함께 살면서 농사를 위한 노동력뿐만 아니라 정서적 지지를 제공받고 있지만[3], 아들의 결혼은 자신이 죽기 전 꼭 해결해야 하는 과업이자 부담일 뿐만 아니라 노인 삶의 성공여부를 평가하는 주요 변인 중 하나이다[4]. 농촌여성노인들은 가사와 농사일을 아들부부에게 넘겨주고, 자신이 돌봄의 대상이 되어야 하지만 아직 아들을 결혼시키지 못한 여성노인인 경우 아들의 성혼을 위해 적극적으로 국제결혼시장에 나서고 있다[5].
