This study examined the Chinese style in the Vivienne Tam collection as well as explored diversity and modern interpretation of a Chinese style used in modern fashion. The study also investigated the concept and history of the Chinese style as well as analyzed the Chinese style in the collection based on a consideration of a Chinese element that is the basic structure with an understanding of Vivienne Tam and general collection themes. As a result of research, the Chinese style appeared in the Vivienne Tam collection was comprehensive with 43 Chinese elements including Animals, Flower & Grass among the Nature elements, Mythology Religion among the Figure elements, Historical Artifacts, Clothing, Oral Literature, Entertainment, Fine Arts. Technique, Folk holiday among Culture elements and Philosophy among Spirit elements, which accounted for 57.6% of the collection. The formative characteristics that included Chinese elements were extended, abstracted, distorted or transformed; in addition, some abstract elements were embodied into animals, images and certain particular forms to present a theme. In addition to two-dimensional method to print Chinese elements on fabric, they were also expressed as a three-dimensional texture or a silhouette, achieving clear and bold harmony. The aesthetic characteristic is a mixture of Eastern and Western way of thinking. Her costume has a political and historical meaning beyond the imitation of elements that represent the development of a pleasant and interesting design.

본 논문은 중국풍을 구성하는 중국요소에 대한 분석을 바탕으로 비비안 탐 컬렉션에 나타난 중국풍을 고찰하여 현대 패션에 활용된 중국풍의 다양성과 현대적인 해석방식을 모색하는데 주된 목적을 두었다. 그러므로 본 논문은 중국풍을 비롯한 동양의 아름다움이 세계인의 심미에 맞게 다양하고 글로벌한 이미지로 적용될 수 있도록 디자인 방법의 기초 자료를 제공해주는데 그 의의가 있다.

문헌연구에서는 중국풍과 관련된 전문서적, 학위논문, 인터넷 자료를 고찰하고 사례분석에는 Vogue, Elle, Haibao, Firstview Korea 등 국내 외사이트의 이미지를 수집한다. 그리고 컬렉션 주제, 소재, 질감을 보다 정확하게 파악하기 위해 Youtube, Baidu, Naver에서 컬렉션에 관한 동영상과 패션 사이트, 블로그의 기사를 참고하여 종합적인 분석을 진행한다.
중국요소는 자연, 인물, 문화요소로 크게 분류되는데 이를 체계적으로 알아본다. 둘째, 보다 세부적인 분석을 위해 디자이너 비비안 탐의 성장배경을 살펴보고 컬렉션의 주제를 파악한다. 셋째, 앞의 고찰을 통해 나타난 자연, 인물, 문화요소를 도입하여 비비안 탐 컬렉션에 나타난 중국풍을 고찰하고 그 특성을 도출한다.

둘째, 보다 세부적인 분석을 위해 디자이너 비비안 탐의 성장배경을 살펴보고 컬렉션의 주제를 파악한다. 셋째, 앞의 고찰을 통해 나타난 자연, 인물, 문화요소를 도입하여 비비안 탐 컬렉션에 나타난 중국풍을 고찰하고 그 특성을 도출한다.
본 논문은 다음과 같은 내용으로 진행하고자 한다. 첫째, 중국풍의 개념과 역사를 요해하고 중국풍의 기본 구성요소인 중국요소를 고찰한다. 중국요소는 자연, 인물, 문화요소로 크게 분류되는데 이를 체계적으로 알아본다.
대상 데이터
또한 비비안 탐의 컬렉션을 보다 사실적이고 섬세하게 분석하기 위해 그녀의 생애와 전반적인 컬렉션의 주제를 분석하였다. 그리고 3.2.의 비비안 탐 컬렉션에 나타난 중국풍 분석에서는 그녀가 2007년 S/S부터 2019년 S/S까지 총 25개시즌동안 발표한 작품 918점에서 패션전공 석사 2인과 박사 1 인(모두 중국인)의 검증을 통한 514점을 연구 대상으로 선정하였다.

중국풍을 자신의 컬렉션에 자주 표현하는 패션디자이너 비비안 탐의 작품 ‘Chairman Mao, Dragon Robe’도 걸작들과 함께 이 전시에 소개되었다. 비비안 탐은 3세에 영국 식민지였던 홍콩으로 이주하여 동서양이 융합된 교육을 받았고 23세에 뉴욕으로 이주하였다. 특별한 성장경력은 비비안 탐에게 동서양의 문화를 동시에 이해하고 응용하는 탁월한 능력을 부여하였기에 그녀의 디자인에는 시대와 공간을 넘나드는 독특한 디자인 철학이 물들어있다.
비비안 탐 즉 담연옥(谭燕玉)은 1957년 11월 28일 중국 광주에서 태어나 3살에 부모님과 함께 홍콩으로 이주하였다. 홍콩 성결령여자중학(聖傑靈女子中學)에서 중학교 교육을 받고 홍콩이공학원(香港理工学院)에서 패션디자인을 전공하였다. 당시 영국의 식민지였던 홍콩에서 비비안 탐은 영어로 된 교과서를 읽고 집에서는 중국어로 말하였으며 중국과 서양이 혼합된 다문화 분위기에서 자랐다.

하지만 이런 구분법은 일부 요소를 확대해석하거나 객관적 기준이 부족하며 상향적 분석이라는 결점을 지닌다. 따라서 본 논문은 보다 종합적이고 하향적 해석을 진행한 Ma Yanming의 구별 방식을 채택하여, 중국요소를 인간 활동의 참여 여부에 따라 자연, 인물, 문화 요소로 분류(Ma, 2015)하고 이에 따라 고찰을 진행하고자 한다.
