코로나바이러스(COVID-19)가 전 세계적으로 유행하는 가운데 대한민국이 그것을 성공적으로 방역할 수 있었던 요인으로 민주적 시민성 요소가 강하게 부각되고 있다. 민주적 시민성은 시민교양으로도 이해될 수 있는데 개인의 개성과 가치, 자유를 존중하면서도 동시에 공동체 안에서 타자와의 건강한 관계를 토대로 공공선을 추구하는 것을 의미한다. 현대 기독교가 공공 영역에서 보다 품위 있고 예의 있게 이러한 시민교양을 실천해야 함에도 불구하고 코로나 사태를 통해 보여준 일부 교회의 모습은 그것과는 거리가 멀었던 것이 사실이다. 이러한 상황에서 본 연구는 현대 기독교가 사사화된 종교를 넘어서 민주적 시민성의 실천을 통해 공동체성을 실현하기 위한 다음과 같은 제안을 하였다. 첫째, 기독교는 공적교회(public church)로서의 인식과 이에 대한 신학적 정립이 필요하다. 둘째, 현대 기독교는 그 어느 때보다도 네트워크 사회의 중요성을 인지하고 공공선을 실행할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 현대 기독교는 지역사회에서 공공체성 개발을 위한 새로운 라이프 스타일을 제공할 수 있어야 한다. 그래서 뉴노멀 시대의 교회는 기독교의 정체성을 가지고 공공의 영역에서 신사적으로 소통하면서 본연의 교회다움을 회복할 수 있어야 한다.

While Coronavirus (COVID-19) is popular all over the world, democratic citizenship is strongly highlighted as a factor that has enabled the Republic of Korea to successfully prevent it. Democratic citizenship can also be understood as a civility, which means respecting the individual's individuality, value and freedom, but at the same time pursuing common good based on healthy relationships with others in the community. It is true that despite the need for modern Christianity to practice this civility more gracefully and politely in the public sphere, some churches and Christians have failed to show it during the Corona crisis. Under these circumstances, this study made the following suggestions for the realization of communality through the practice of democratic citizenship beyond the privatization of modern Christianity. First, Christianity needs recognition as a public church and theological establishment of it. Second, modern Christianity needs to recognize the importance of a network society and practice public good more than ever. Third, modern Christianity should be able to provide a new lifestyle for the development of public character in the community. So the New Normal-era church should be able to restore its original churchlikeness by having a Christian identity and communicating gentlemanly in the public domain.

앞선 이해를 토대로, 현대 기독교는 그 구성원들이 공공의 일상의 영역에서 보다 교양 있고 품위 있는 윤리적인 삶을 살아감으로 기독교적 가치와 정체성을 드러낼 뿐만 아니라, 보다 기본적으로 시민 사회의 구성원으로서의 바른 민주적 시민성을 실천하여 누구나가다 공동체의 안녕과 행복을 공유할 수 있도록 도와야 할 책임이 있다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 21세기 뉴노멀시대를 맞이한 현대 기독교가 단순히 교회적 범위를 벗어난 공공의 영역에서 공동체성을 회복하고 바른 시민 교양을 실천함으로 다원주의 상황에서 보편적인 기독교적 가치를 실현할 수 있는 방안들을 제시해 보고자 한다.
본 연구는 21세기 뉴노멀 시대를 촉진시킨 이번 코로나 사태에서 한국의 방역 정책이 성공적인 성과를 거둘 수 있었던 요인이 무엇이었는지를 확인하고 그 특징적 요소의 실천에 있어서 현대 기독교의 적용 가능성을 탐색하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 지금까지 뉴노멀 시대의 기독교 역할에 대한 다양한 연구들이 있어왔지만 본 연구가 시민사회의 공동체적 관점에서 민주적 시민성을 중심으로 진행되었다는 점에서 차별성을 가진다고 할 수 있다.

점점 더 다원화되고 있는 오늘날의 사회에서 다양성의 의미는 보다 진지한 탐구가 필요한 사항이다. 교회는 성경이 이웃을 사랑하라고 명령할 때 우리 자신과 가장 유사한 이웃을 선택할 수 있는 권한을 주지는 않았으며, 성경이 이웃으로 제시했던 사마리아인은 당시에 하층 계급의 경멸받는 민족 외부인이었음을 기억할 필요가 있다. 교회가 공동체성을 상실한다면 교회의 정체성 또한 상실하는 것이다.
셋째, 시민사회의 위축이다. 오늘날의 사회가 공동의 의미를 상실함에 따라 시민들은 공동의 목적, 혹은 심지어 공동의 취미를 위해 자발적인 모임에 모이는 경향이 훨씬 줄어들었다.
그리스도인들은 그저 종말론적인 위기를 논하면서 단순히 그것을 강조하는 것은 시민으로서의 의무를 져버리는 직무유기로 인식하고 더 좋은 공적인 영역을 갈망할 수 있고 또 갈망해야 한다. 현대 기독교가 영성이나 종교성을 바탕으로 사회 보편적 가치를 실천하고 기독교가 주장하는 기준과 사회적 가치가 사회의 상식보다 탁월할 때, 비로소 교회가 지역사회 공동체에서 바른 역할을 감당하고 있다고 말할 수 있을 것이다. 마지막으로 현대 기독교가 삶의 현장에서 환대와 사랑을 실천할 수 있는 실제적인 라이프스타일의 제시를 위한 다양한 노력들이 필요함을 확인했다.

그런 의미에서 이것은 본 연구에 대한 한계로 지적될 수 있다. 따라서 특수한 위기 상황이 아닌 일상의 삶의 맥락에서는 우리 사회의 민주적 시민성이 어떻게 작동하는지 살펴보는 것은 매우 중요하며 향후 이러한 연구가 진행될 수 있기를 제언한다. 또한 현대 기독교는 그 구성원들이 개인과 공동체의 행복을 위해 바른 선택을 하고 공동선을 추구할 수 있도록 대중에 대한 교육의 필요성을 인식하고 이를 위한 관심과 연구가 필요할 것이다.
