IUCN은 조금 더 구체적으로 NbS는 ‘인간복지와 종다양성 모두의 이익을 위해 사회적 도전과제에 효과적, 적응적, 동시적으로 대처할 수 있도록 자연 및 개변 생태계를 보호하고, 지속적으로 관리하고, 복원하는 행위’라 하였다 (IUCN 2016). NbS의 좋은 사례로서 해안에서 폭풍해일의 위험을 감소하기 위해 전통적인 기술적 대책으로 해안방벽을 건설하기 보다는 기존의 맹그로브 해안수림대를 보전, 복원하는 대안을 고려하는 것을 들 수 있다. | |

IUCN 자료를 기준으로 검토하면, NbS의 궁극적 목표는 기후변화, 물안보, 보건, 재해위험, 사회경제개발 등 당면한 사회적 도전에 대처하도록 설계하는 것이다 (IUCN 2016). 다음, IUCN이 제시한 NbS의 정의는 위에서 이미 소개하였으며, EU의 정의는 ‘다양한 사회적 도전에 자원효율적이고 적응적인 방법으로 대처하면서 동시에 경제, 사회, 환경 편익을 얻기 위하여, 자연에 의해 영감을 받고 지속적으로 지원을 받는, 나아가 자연을 이용하는 살아있는 대책’ 이라 하였다. |
