미국-멕시코 국경지대는 멕시코의 마킬라도라 산업에 대한 세계 다국적기업들의 투자로 인해 고용확대, 인구증가, 산업발달이 이루어지고, 특히 국경지대의 쌍둥이 도시들은 많은 사회경제적 변화를 겪게 되었다. 1965년에 시작된 멕시코의 마킬라도라 프로그램은 외국기업의 투자를 유치하기 위한 보세가공 산업정책이었는데, 2006년부터는 멕시코인 소유의 수출기업을 포함하는 IMMEX 프로그램으로 대체되었다. 마킬라도라를 포함한 IMMEX 기업들은 2007년 이후 업체수는 큰 변화가 없는 반면 업체당 종사자수는 점차 대형화하고 있다. 업종별로 보면 자동차, 항공기와 관련된 운송장비제조업이 가장 크게 성장하였으며, 과거 마킬라도라 산업에서 큰 비중을 차지하던 섬유·직물·의류제조업은 상대적으로 침체의 길을 걷고 있다. IMMEX의 비제조업 분야에서는 종사자수와 해외매출액에 있어서 농업의 비중이 압도적이다. IMMEX 기업들의 지역적 분포에서는 티화나와 후아레스가 압도적으로 높은 비중을 차지하고 있다.
