[국내논문] 한국의 도서관 명칭 수용 및 쟁점 연구 - 일본홍도회 부산포지회 도서실을 중심으로 -

한국의 근현대 도서관 역사는 150년에 불과하다. 그럼에도 도서실(관)이란 말이 언제 등장하여 어떻게 변용되어 왔는지, 그리고 개화기 일본홍도회 부산포지회가 개설한 도서관의 명칭 및 전모에 대해서는 쟁점이 많다. 이에 본 연구는 여러 쟁점을 분석하고 논증하였다. 그 결과, 도서실이란 말은 조선 초기부터 시문집, 묘비명, 일기에 등장한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 도서관은 1895년 유길준이 「서유견문」 을 통해 최초로 소개하였다는 것이 중론이었으나 1881년 이헌영의 「일사집략」에 등장하며, 1884년 「한성순보」에도 소개되었다. 그리고 시설명에 부여한 최초의 명칭은 1901년 10월 10일 부산포지회가 개설한 홍도도서실이다. 많은 문헌에 기술된 도서구락부, 독서구락부(도서실), 부산(부산지부)도서실(관), 홍도도서관 등은 오류다. 홍도도서실 위치는 용두산 서산하정 임차지의 임시 가옥이었고, 규모는 방 1칸 정도와 화한서와 양서로 구성된 장서 1천권 내외였으며, 일본 거류민을 대상으로 유료서비스를 제공한 것으로 짐작된다. 비록 홍도도서실이 한국인에 의해 설립한 최초 공공도서관은 아니지만, 한국에 존재한 최초 공공도서관이었다는 사실은 부인할 수 없다. 따라서 홍도도서실의 성격을 규정할 때는 민족적 정서, 역사적 갈등, 이념적 프레임을 초월하는 냉정함과 분별력이 요구된다.
