본 연구는 과천시 지식정보타운에 건립될 도서관의 운영을 위한 체계적이고 종합적인 계획을 수립하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 과천시 공공도서관 이용자들을 대상으로 도서관 운영 요구도 조사를 실시하고, 설문 결과를 바탕으로 도서관 장서 구축 계획, 이용자 서비스 및 이용활성화 방안을 수립하고자 하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 도서관은 누구나 이용할 수 있는 복합문화공간이자 이용자의 휴식공간 등으로 활용되도록 공간을 구성해야 하며, 일정 수준 이상의 소음을 허용하여 자유로운 정보 소통 및 커뮤니케이션 공간 등으로 제공되어야 한다. 둘째, 선호하는 장서의 형태와 종류(유형) 등에 대해 분석한 결과, 1순위 인쇄자료, 2순위 웹자료, 3순위 전자책/전자저널 등의 순으로 나타났으며, 도서 주제는 문학, 역사 등에 대한 선호도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 문화예술프로그램에 대한 선호도가 높게 나타나, 향후 과천지식정보타운 도서관이 문화예술을 주제로 한 프로그램을 강화하여 운영할 필요가 있을 것으로 파악하였다.
