Abstract

Product data management (PDM) looks like a revolution. It is supposed to be about version control of products. But, there is another version control issue for PDM buyers. PDM systems might be able to use the Internet, but they often assume the business models in use before the Internet arrived, with design and marketing within one organization. The cultural and organizational issues dwarf any problems with the technology. Many companies feel that there is a growing need for them to collaborate on designs.
