The uranyl complexes of EDTA have been studied by potentiometry ; stability constants of the 1:1 and 2:1 (metal to ligand) chelates have been determined, as well as the respective hydrolysis and polymerization constants. Possible structures for these species are discussed. To account for the abnormally high stability of UO2(H2O)HL-, hydrogen bonding between a protonated nitrogen atom of the ligand and one oxygen atom of UO22+ is suggested.

Abstract

Die Uranylkomplexe von EDTA wurden potentiometrisch untersucht; die Stabilitatskonstanten der Chelate mit Metall: Ligand -Verhaltnis 1:1 und 1:2 wurden bestimmt sowie die entsprechenden Hydrolysen- und Polymerisationskonstanten. Mogliche Strukturen dieser Spezies werden diskutiert. Zur Erklarung der abnormal hohen Stabilitat von UO2(H2O)HL- wird eine Wasserstoffbrucke zwischen einem protonierten Stickstoffatom des Liganden und einem Sauerstoffatom von UO22+ vorgeschlagen.

Abstract

On a etudie par potentiometrie les complexes uranyles de l'EDTA; on a determine les constantes de stabilite des chelates 1:1 et 2:1 (rapport metal-ligand), ainsi que les constantes respectives d'hydrolyse et de polymerisation. On discute de structures possibles pour ces especes. Pour interpreter la stabilite anormalement grande de UO2(H2O)HL-, on suggere une liaison hydrogene entre un atome d'azote protone du ligand et un atome d'oxygene de UO22+.
