Problem-based Learning(PBL) teaching method was compared with a Lecture based Learning(LBL) teaching method to determine the effects on problem solving ability of undergraduate exercise physiology students. A total number of four scenarios were used through the analysis of learning content in the selected exercise physiology class and the classification of concepts in the areas of energy system, cardiovascular disease, and obesity with related training and adaptation. The study involved 12 weeks of instruction of undergraduate students at the University of Northern Iowa, USA using either PBL as the experimental condition (n=23) and LBL as the control condition (n=23). Problem Solving Inventory(PSI) were used to measure problem solving ability. Reflective journals maintained by the enrolled students were used to support quantitative results. The data were analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA to compare the interaction of improvement between the two groups. Contents analysis was utilized for the qualitative analysis. The findings indicated that the effects of method, time and method × time interaction were not significantly different on problem solving ability. However, PBL students tended to approach to the problem whereas LBL students tended to avoid the problem. Based on the reflective journals, factors such as the time needed to understand PBL process, the difficulty of course content, poor cooperation by group members and the lack of tutors were identified as areas of concern for the PBL students. However, students' perception on PBL changed positively as time passed and as they became more familiar with the process. This study contributes to our understanding of the relationship between different educational teaching approaches and selected student outcomes. These results may be helpful in the design and delivery of exercise physiology educational programs. In order to better understand the benefits and limitations of PBL in exercise physiology education, future research should be longitudinal in design and less reliant on self-report measures of the outcomes of interest.
