Interpretation of Formation and Growth Processes of Manjang Lava Tube through Detailed Surveying with Electronic Total Station

Jeju Island is a gently sloping shield volcano in which about 120 lava tubes have been found within the lavas. In this study, the Manjang lava tube cave was surveyed using an electronic total station from the 3rd entrance to the 1st entrance, which is part of the Geomunorm lava tube system located in the northeastern Jeju Island. We interpret formation and growth processes of the lava tube, based on the survey data. The slopes of the lava tube floor and the ground surface are 0.4˚ and 0.7˚ on average, respectively, while the ratio of maximum height to maximum width in the lava tube is 1.3, suggesting that the tube"s height is larger than the width. The tube floor is locally flat and consistently sloping downstream, while the ceiling height is extremely inconsistent, ranging from 2 to 23 m. The formation processes of the Manjang cave can be interpreted as follows based on its geometry. The lava tube was formed from continued sheet flows on a gently sloping topography. The outer crust of the sheet flows was first solidified and then the inner fluidal lava was drained out during a continuous flowing beneath the solidified crust to eventually form the initial stage of the lava tube. Later, the tube continuously supplied the subsequent lava flows to result in thermal erosion of the tube"s floor. The thermal erosion was dominant on the floor and the accretion of lava flows on the tube-ceiling caused the irregular height of the tube. Gradually modified tube shows a sinuous form with a height larger than the width. We can explain the formation and growth processes of the Manjang cave, as follows. Firstly, the initial lava tube was formed, and then subsequent lava flow passed through the initial tube. Then, the surface of the flowing lava became solidified to form the floor of the upper level tube. Afterwards, the liquid lava was drained to form the lower level tube, which constructed a multi-level lava tube. The later lavas continually flowed through the lower level tube, caused deeper erosion of the tube"s floor and thicker lava accretions of the tube"s ceilings. Finally, a new lava poured down from the ground surface into the lower level tube to form a lava column within the tube.
