This study deals with groundwater discharge from eight lines (Line 1 ~ Line 8) of subway in Seoul, Korea. The quantity of groundwater discharge from subway is 3,498×10⁴ ㎥/yr (97,308 ㎥/day), and is proportional to the tunnel length with the exponential function. The ratio of subway station with groundwater discharge less than 100 ㎥/day is 57%, and 100~1,000 ㎥/day is 33.8%. That with groundwater discharge more than 1,000 ㎥/day is 9.2%. The sustainable development yield of groundwater is about 5,060×104 ㎥/yr (138,630 ㎥/day), and the total use of groundwater is 3,210×10⁴ ㎥/yr (87,945 ㎥/day). The sum of total groundwater use and groundwater discharge from subway exceeds 32.6% in comparison with the sustainable development yield of groundwater. In 17 counties of Seoul (total 25 counties), the sum of total groundwater use and groundwater discharge from subway exceeds the sustainable development yield. In Dongjak-gu, Yeongdeungpo-gu and Jongno-gu, it exceeds more than two times of the sustainable development yield. In Jung-gu,tit is almost four times of the sustainable development yield. Groundwater level around subway is seriously decreased because of heavy groundwater discharge from subway, and many unused wells are generated because of groundwater shortage. Thus, groundwater shortage, land subsidence and land movement due to earthquake are feared in the future. Groundwater quality around subway is deteriorated by the inflow of the Han River or its tributaries. Groundwater preservation zone needs to be established at the area of the problems such as the serious drawdown of groundwater level and the deterioration of groundwater quality. Artificial recharge is required to refill groundwater at low groundwater-level areas. Permeable asphalt is also necessary to recover the groundwater level, and waterproof tunneling is required to avoid the serious groundwater discharge at the troubled area in case of additional tunneling. Subway tunnels should be included in facilities inducing groundwater contamination in Article 16-3 of Groundwater Act. Groundwater around subway tunnels should not be contaminated anymore, and contaminated groundwater need to be remediated using proper treatment techniques by contamination inducers.
