In the process of forming costume cultures reflecting certain aspects of daily life experiences, costume colors have been influenced by emotional and mental values of each age, presenting various symbolic meanings. The Korean costume colors, based on the Yin-Yang(passive-active) WU-hsing(five-agents), have been interwoven in the emotion and feelings, the way of thinking and the life style of Korean people throughout a long period, resulting in the formation of traditional Korean costume culture. Yin-yang(passive-active) Wu-hsing(five-agent) in the theory explaining the natural order and natural harmony of the universe. It has been believed to have an organic relationship with the human lives. Yin-yang is the basic spirit to explain the changes, rules, and origins of each phenomena in the universe. Meanwhild, Wu-hsing consists of wood, fire, earth, metal and water, which have been considered five fundamental elements to all the things in the universe. Thus, the theory of Yin-yang Wu-hasing has been prominent in many oriental countries in the past. This study, therefore, has concentrated on Yin-yang Wu-hsing, which has been the foundation of Korean concepts on colors. Then, it also examined the geceral and symbolic role that Yin-yang WU-hsing played on Korea mental structure and in their daily lives.
