This study was designed as an attempt to change the structure of history classroom communication. First, this study examined the problems of current classroom discourse and suggested the desirable process of classroom communication and its characteristics. Second, this study probed the educational meaning of students’questions and surveyed various kinds of mechanism for generating questions from students. Third, this study defined students’questions as a driving force of meaningful learning, thus experimented history lessons with student-generated questions, and analyzed the result of lessons. This experiment tested the possibility of history lesson which is driven by students’questions. The experiment hypothesized teacher’s classroom behavior and attitudes as the most important factor of generating students’ questions. In this experiment, teacher encouraged students to ask any question at any time during the teacher’s lecture, thus to experience that ‘questioning’is not a ‘technique’but a natural thinking process. The result of experiment showed that students’question-based learning is possible in history classroom, and it depends on teacher’s standpoint of history, teaching, and students. History lessons which are based on students’ questions were affected little by history knowledge type, learning materials, or teaching methods. Students poured many questions in normal history lecture classroom when given teacher’s tolerant attitude. The question-based lesson enhanced learning motive of students, especially of low-achievement students. They welcomed question-driven classroom with open mind and participated with various questions and responses. But, some students were inactive in questioning and still preferred ‘just listening to teacher’s lecture’. In some lessons, classroom atmosphere was a bit chaos and students asked questions simultaneously, thus making hard to discern them. The failure of measuring clearly the effect of student-generated questions on student’s achievement and thinking ability is a big limitation of this study.
