Despite the secularization thesis, since 1980s religion has not only survived; it is flourishing. Thus, Peter Berger has recently admitted that the assumption that we live in a secularized world is false. The fact that we live in globally interconnected world has become a cliche. Many people are becoming increasingly concerned with globalization; yet serious study of these changes (e.g. the religious dimension of globalization) is just beginning. The application of globalization theories to religious movements is relatively underdeveloped. In this context, the purpose of this study is to investigate the structural predicament or destiny of contemporary world religions under the pressure of the globalization of modern society in the perspective of sociology of religion, using world system theories and globalization theories. It is true that religious fundamentalism exemplified by Islamic fundamentalism and Pentecostalism is leading the worldwide growth of religion. For practical reasons, in this sense, my focus in this study is on the two large world systemic religions - Islam and Christianity (especially Protestantism). Regarding religion"s place within globalization, all contemporary world religions experiencing structural differentiation, authority and legitimacy crisis, pluralism problem, and privatization, confront a similar structural predicament, related to the globalization of mass societies and the porous pluralism of late modernity. Two burdens are borne by globalization: the relativization of particularistic identities, that is, specific religions and the marginalization of religion as a mode of social communication in favor of other modes, the political and the economic. In a nutshell, the main structural predicament or dilemma of world religions is: while the privatized (pure) function of religions is increasing, their public influence is decreasing.
