This paper aims to describe the usefulness and methods of the construction of digital archives with cultural resources on the basis of personal experiences constructing digital archives in Group for the People without History(GPWH). The technological development has changed research techniques of fieldworkers, and even created such new subdisciplines as visual anthropology, ethnographic film, and anthropology of sound. However, what is important is that new technologies have made fieldworkers manage much more data produced with various kinds of media. The situation urges fieldworkers to build archives on different perspective from traditional one. Furthermore, the development of information technology has changed the academic atmosphere, and emphasizes more collaborative works exchanging informations and ideas on line. Therefore, it is very important and urgent for fieldworkers to build proper archives in order to manage multimedia data and promote collaborative academic projects. GPWH, which was launched in 2002, has tried to construct digital archives, and the case seems to shed lights on the construction of digital archives of cultural resources in general. In constructing digital archives, the most important prerequisite is the standardization of storage medium, data format, and metadata format to ensure economical and managerial efficiency. The archives of GPWH decided to use HDs and CDs as storage media. Data format takes different formats depending on the attributes of data: hwp for texts, jpg for pictures, wmv for moving pictures, and mp3 for sounds. Among various metadata formats, GPWH archives chose Dublin Core since it is an international standard with many virtues as metadata. Though the GPWH archives are not accessible to people on the outside because of legal and ethical constraints not yet solves, digital archives will have great consequences on cultural industries as well as academics. In my experience construction the GPWH digital archives, researching and archiving tasks, especially relating to cultural resources, should be carried on in close cooperation. But a most desirable way is that researchers make themselves well-trained archivists. This paper shows just a case of the digital archives construction. For better ones, what we need at this point is to exchange informations and ideas among the institutions which are constructing or plan to construct digital archives.
