This paper is aimed at studying trans-nationally married couples in Korea, particularly focusing on how much, why, and how do they get married, and what are the adaptation problems. In order to do this, this study conducted focus group interviews to thirty-two migrant women from the Philippines and Vietnam and their husbands who have participated in the home visiting program for migrant women and their families from August 1 to August 8, 2007. The focus group interviews were conducted three times: before, during and after the visit. The findings are as follows: First, transnational marriages are rapidly increasing in Korea since the 1990"s and reached 13.6% in 2005. Particularly, the marriages between the Korean men and foreign women are rapidly increasing and the nationality of the foreign wives is also changing. The background of these phenomena can be found in the uneven development in the globalization and the consequent international sexual division of labor, and the change in the marriage market in Korea. The Korean men in transnational marriages are mostly from the rural areas and from the lower income strata. The foreign wives turned out to be younger in case of Vietnamese and better educated in case of the Filipinos. Most of them get married through commercial mediating agencies or through churches. Second, the adaptation problems facing migrant women and their husbands turned out to be language, food and family relation adaptation, among others. In the beginning the adaptation turned out to be a one-sided adaptation of the migrant women. And in the process of adaptation of husbands and wives there turned out to be three stages of change. In the first stage, that is, before child-birth, wives try hard to adapt to the new environment, but most husbands seem to have suspicion over their wives. In the second stage, that is, after child-birth, husbands begin to trust wives and make efforts. In the third stage, that is, after home visiting, husbands and wives mutually understand and adapt to each other. Third, the factors influencing the adaptation process turned out to be 1) family environment, 2) child-birth, 3) social network, and 4) home visit and inter-cultural experience. Among these the effect of the home visiting turned out to be 1) increase in mutual adaptation through understanding of other cultures, 2) improvement of the relationship of the husbands to wives" families, and 3) increase in mutual understanding and relationship between husbands and wives. Thus the meaning of the home visiting can be summarized as an important moment of 1) change from trust to understanding, 2) change from one-sided adaptation to mutual adaptation, 3) change into more positive and aggressive attitude toward life in general.
