This article attempts to shed new light on a biography of No-Yong Park, the author of Chinaman"s Chance (1940), one of the early Korean American immigrant autobiographies. Although he has been so far categorized as a Chinese American writer or a Korean/Chinese American writer, he was in fact a Korean American writer in the true sense of the word. A close reading of Facing Four Ways (1980), a newly discovered autobiography by Lanhei Kim Park (Mrs. No-Young Park), indicates that Park was born and grew up in Namhae-do, South Kyungsang Province in 1897, not in Northern Manchuria as Park said in his autobiography and some scholars believe. It also reveals that Park was first educated in Tongdo-sa, Yangsan, South Kyungsang Province and then in Joongang School, in Seoul-not in Manchuria, Nanking, Tokyo, etc. This article further argues that Park"s Chinaman"s Chance is not only an immigrant autobiography, but an “autobiographical fiction” or a “fictionalized autobiography” as well. Based on Park"s autobiography, it advances the theory that an autobiographer cannot but fictionalize his or her own life story for a variety of reasons and thus there is no such thing as a genuine autobiography. In addition, this article explores that No-Yong Park is much unlike typical Korean immigrant writers in that he tries to “unlearn” the civilized Western ways of life. Strongly influenced by Henry David Thoreau, he was critical of materialism in American society, suggesting the Oriental ways of life as a possible alternative. In sum, Park"s autobiography contributes to the expansion in Korean American Literature of its horizon from socio-historical and ethnographical studies of Korean immigrants" adaption to American society to a poignant critique of the adopted country.
