This paper tries to show how one Japanese, in his attempt to understand Korean culture, a kind of method to understand Korean Culture. Although it is difficult, and dangerous to pin-point one aspect of a culture as its "essence," I believe the essentialistic approach is still the best method to understand Korean culture. I first presupposed culture and civilization are engaged in various and complex activities among three elements, viz.〈2=civilization〉, 〈1 =culture〉, 〈0=valueless horizon〉and in so doing, comprising so-called "cultural ecosystem." I applied such scheme to understanding the three East Asian countries. We could see that thinkers and authority figures of each country identified themselves in such a way that China as 〈2〉, Korea as 〈I〉, and Japan as 〈0〉. Such a way of identifying a country according to a certain schema is again bound to be placed under one biased perspective; however, it is nevertheless useful to examine the three countries under such framework in that the relation among the three can be clarified with a focus, and a clue to resolve cultural conflicts among them is to be provided. In order to settle various problems such as the conflict between culture and civilization, the difficulty of multi-culturalism, and the question of historical consciousness, it is more effective to replace the modem western Weltanschauung with "multi-subjectivism."
