Design is a knowledge-based economic activity to generate values for the market and customers, and a management activity to enhance efficiency for suppliers and customers. Design is more than a unit step in the production process of artifacts and services. Rather it is a catalyst facilitating interaction among marketing, communication, R&D, production, and all other business activities within the value chain of a designated product or service. Customers view all these business activities as one integrated value proposition entailing both material components (products) and immaterial components (services). Design, having a causality relationship with all these value proposition activities, needs to be approached from multidisciplinary and Wholistic perspectives to understand and meet the needs of the market. Successful design functions as an organic body that dynamically responds to the environment, markets and end users. The current trends of the market and customers call for increased emphasis on the emotional, sensibility, and empathetic aspects in products and services. As the customers’ emotions, intelligence, life-styles, and the society in general are continuously evolving and becoming more complicated, unitive and consilient approaches to design that encompass science, technology, humanities, the arts, management and aesthetics are necessary. The entropy concept in science and engineering that represents the unpredictability or complexity of the design system is applied to design. This study introduces a new view of design as a non-linear, unsteady, unequilibrant, and complex system that can be observed in nature. In this context, the role of design is to stimulate and induce the self-organization of the complex design system. This paper examines design’s relationship to environmental factors, user" experiences, and designers’ creative factors. In this study, relational design is researched by observing the significance of communication, empathy, and participation with and by the customers as the driving forces in the design efforts.
