The purpose of this study is to gain an insight into the communication perceptions among Chinese college students studying in Korea concerning the cultural differences they experience during their study abroad. The researchers investigated two aspects of the communication perceptions among Chinese college students in Korea: ① Perceptions of good communication, and ② Perceptions of cultural communication barriers they experience in Korea. A qualitative survey and concept mapping technique yielded meaningful clusters representing major elements in the two aspects of communication perceptions among the respondents. The researchers, through an open ended survey, collected data concerning communication perceptions among Chinese college students in Korea. The answers were sorted into key sentences which were subsequently put to concept map analysis. The results showed that the perceptions on good communication were clustered into 6 distinct concepts: ① Truthfulness, ② Etiquette, ③ Empathy, ④ Word Choice, ⑤ Proper Topic, and ⑥ Mutual Purpose. The perceptions on cultural barriers were clustered into 6 concepts: ① Ethnocentric culture, ② Emotional Approaches, ③ Strict Hierarchical Communication, ④ Choice of Topic, ⑤ Lack of Understanding about China, and ⑥ College Life Style. The concept maps imply that the communication barriers Chinese college students experience in Korean society are related to their cultural values that define good communication. The results of the study indicate that communication problems among Chinese college students in Korea stem from cultural identity issues rather than a mere language barrier.
