This study explores how the two “Thinking Buddhist Images,” which are housed in the National Museum of Korea, designated as national treasures are shown in modern Korean poetry. This paper attempts to investigate their artistic significance, by tracing back to the creative process and backgrounds of the poems on the “Thinking Buddhist Images” in case of Koo Sang, Kim Jong-Gil, Lee Su-Hwa, Hwang Ji-Woo including myself. This paper, in particular, analyses the “Thinking Buddhist Images” by comparing them with Auguste Rodin"s “The Thinker” considered as a work representing Western sculpture. It also tries to reveal the significances of the smile by comparing the smile of “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo da Vinch with that of the “Thinking Buddhist Images.” Rodin"s “The Thinker” is a work in the stage of agony before that of ‘thinking,’ whereas the “Thinking Buddhist Images” are the works in the ultimate stage of human existence, overcoming the agony through thinking. As regards the smile, the smile of “Mona Lisa” is considered not to be out of the worldliness, while that of the “Thinking Buddhist Images” is considered to reach the eternal peace above the worldliness. Assuming that the process of comparison and analysis shows that the form and the smile of the “Thinking Buddhist Images” reflect the artistic sense and aesthetics peculiar to Koreans, this paper ultimately attempts to further extend the identity of Korean cultural art by developing the argument in its relation to modern Korean poetry. This interpretation seems to be open to criticism in that it is self-centered rather than objective argument. However, this study would be significant in the sense that first of all, it aims to recognize the Korean cultural arts in a new perspective, whose identity has not yet been rightly estimated because it has been dependent on the Western literature and art for the last 20 centuries. Secondly, it seems to be of significance in that it, furthermore, will serve as a momentum to help establish a creative paradigm for the digitalized cultural arts in the 21st century.
