What is an angel? According to the Christian dogma, the angel is a spiritual and intellectual being created by God; the angel therefore belongs to an inapprehensible and sacred world. Saint Gregory of Nyssa, one of the Three Cappadocian Fathers, discussed the pure spirituality of the angel, and Saint Basil the Great called the angel ‘breeze’ or ‘unformed fire’. The Church proclaimed the existence of angels, but did not explain concretely their nature, role or hierarchy. Only some stories of the Bible reveal indirectly that as a messenger of God and as a mediator between human and God, the angel performs an injunction of the Lord. However, through centuries, the angel was depicted innumerably, became an object of respect/pilgrimage and an important iconographic subject of Christian art. In morphological characteristics, the figure of an angel, especially of a Christian angel, is derived from the Ancient Egyptian and Mesopotamian art, and became a part of Christian art by acculturation of greek, roman, and Judaic cultures. But this kind of simple and hasty conclusion attaching the figure of a Christian angel to another visual tradition, may cause distorted iconographic ascription of meaning. In this research, we did not try to explain the characteristics and origins of the forme, but the figure of angel is considered in iconographic meaning. In other words, we ask “In the Early Christian Art, how did the angel come into the picture?”, “How were they depicted?”, and “Why did they use such an expression method?” To understand the iconography of the Christian celestial hierarchy, byzantine seraphic iconography is especially worthy of notice. The figure of Seraphim was obtained from artistic progress of Byzantium, showing fully different expression far from the Early Christian art, and a new iconographic meaning was attached to the angelic form. We tried to explain the etymology, the biblical meaning and the plastic characteristics of Seraphim, and also its relation with the Christian liturgy.
