Antibacterial and Antifungal Activities of Propolis Collected in Various Areas of Korea by High Performance Thin-Layer Chromatography

Propolis is a resinous substance collected by honeybees from various plant sources. The composition of propolis depends on time, vegetation, and area of collection. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial and antifungal activity of Korean propolis from various geographic origins: Gyeonggi, Gangwon, Chungbuk, Chungnam, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gyeongbuk, Gyeongnam and Jeju Island. Each sample was tested with six microbial and three molds strains of type cultures including Gram-positive (Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium, Vibrio parahaemolyticus) bacterias and molds (Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus oryzae, Penicillium chrysogenum) in vitro. Ethanol extracts of propolis (EEP) were evaluated for their antibacterial and antifungal activitiesd by high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) / bioautography methods. As a result, EEP samples were more effective against Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative ones. Furthermore, all EEP samples (P1~P16) had relatively strong antibacterial and antifungal activities, except those from Jeju Island (P17, P18), which is apart from other sample areas in Korean peninsula.
