Groundwater dependent ecosystems (GDEs) with eco-hydrological changes due to chemical exchange and biological transition often occcur in hyporheic zones where surface water and ground water encounter. In this study, we develop a groundwater modeling technique by coupling Modflow-Surfact 2.2, three-dimensional groundwater simulator in variably saturated porous media, and a module for calculating actual evapotranspiration rates based on Thornthwaite method. Thomthwaite method uses meteorological data, land cover, vegetation, and soil types to estimate evapotranspiration rates. We applied a developed model to the Munsan stream area located in Paju-si, South Korea. In the study site, elevated concentrations of NO₃-N (> 10 ㎎/ℓ) were observed in some stream water and ground water samples. So we assumed a potential groundwater contamination source in the groundwater monitoring well with high NO₃-N concentration, then we simulate contaminant transport and examine contaminant concentration changes of groundwater discharges to the stream. For non-reactive contaminants, longitudinal dispersivity affects distribution of contaminant plume. For reactive contaminants, however, reaction rates has a significant influence on the fate and transport of contaminants, consequently, the quality of groundwater as well as stream water in groundwater dependent ecosystems. This work demonstrates the applicability of groundwater-ecosystem modeling technique to quantitative management and control of anthropogenic contamination due to anthropogenic activities in areas associated with GDEs for protection of water resources and ecosystems.
