As the aging of society increases, the importance of universal designs which consider the elderly in design of home appliances is increasing. This study represents preliminary research towards the final goal of developing a universal dssign guideline for electronic home appliances that consider the elderly, as there are at present few studies on the application of a universal design to develop electronic home appliances on the whole. There are only some cases of applying universal design to individual electronics such as washing machine, cell phone and etc. This study aims to determine elderly users" needs and their context of use when using home appliances in real-life experiences. We attempt to determine the types of appliances they possess at home, how important they feel about them, how many features they use for each appliance, and how actually they use the appliances by visiting nine households with elderly residents and applying a guided tour interview method. We came to understand the elderly users" own perceptions and values, their contexts of use and their social, cultural, psychological needs more deeply and thus suggest development directions and discuss design implications for elderly-friendly electronics in terms of economic consciousness, health consciousness, safety matters, single-person use, small capacity functions, connectivity/communication issues, AS/managemetn & storage issues, and plug/cord issues. This study has meaning in that it attempts to unearth realistic data regarding the values, needs and contexts of use by the elderly, which cannot easily be accomplished via quantitative methods. The research findings described in this paper can be used to develop a new concept of elderly-friendly electronics and new marketing strategies while serving as basic information to prioritize electronics as regards the application of universal designs.
