This study examines the problematics of nationalist discourses, looking at the representation of women in Korean national blockbusters. It frames Korean national blockbusters within the relationship between the global media environments and the local film culture in order to reconsider the concept of national cinema. A close look at three Korean national blockbusters, Taegukgi: The Brotherhood of War (2003), Typhoon (2005), and Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005), illustrates how the homogenizing nationalist discourses are reproduced within the cinematic narratives of the national division and the Korean War. The focus is on the gendered imagination, the espousal of patriarchal ideology, and the extent to which the Korean national blockbusters exploit the notion of national cinema in commercial terms. Based on the analysis, the male-centered nationalist narratives position the female characters as cinematic devices that allow the male protagonists to get motivated or transform their masculine identities. Also, the women"s bodies are often employed as the trope for the nation, often symbolizing the tragic history. Within the nationalist, patriarchal discourses in the Korean national blockbusters, the Korean women are portrayed as marginalized figures with little agency, which are not much different from the representative female stereotypes in the history of Korean cinema, whore and mother. The nationalist representation of Korean women in the Korean national blockbusters demonstrates the interweaving influence of the male-centered discourses such as nationalism, militarism, and Confucian patriarchy, drawing attention to the ways in which the big-budget films" domination of the market suppresses the development of cultural diversities and social differences. More importantly, the Korean national blockbusters" dependence on nationalism and other hegemonic discourses raises questions about the true meaning of the national, illustrating the contradiction inherent in the cultural negotiation between the global and the local.
