This article aims to examine the uses of Greek myth in Herodotos" Historiai and explain has attitude toward myth. Herodotos, the so-called father of history, usually has been appraised as liberating history from myth. In Historiai, however, Greek and foreign myths are often told, so some historians don"t agree with the aforesaid appraisal of Herodotos. This article intends to suggest some solutions to the controversy over Herodotos, by surveying Greek myth examples mentioned in Historiai. When Herodotos mentions Greek myths, he denies them, or accepts them with some modifications, or just narrates them without showing his opinions of them. In this article myths denied are grouped in typeⅠ, myths accepted with some modifications in typeⅡ, myths narrated without showing his opinions in typeⅢ. Ⅰpick out nine examples where stories of Greek mythical events are somewhat sufficiently told : (1) Herakles" queer behaviors in Egypt, (2)Europa"s journey, (3)the Trojan War and Helena"s whereabouts, (4)Herakles" genealogy, (5)Kadmos" settlement in Boiotia, (6)Io"s journey, (7)the competition between Athena and Poseidon for Athens, (8)the birth and rearing of Dionysos, (9)Kadmos" voyage searching for Europa. Among these, example (1) is grouped in typeⅠ, while examples (2),(3),(4), and (5) are grouped in typeⅡ, examples (6),(7),(8), and (9) are grouped in typeⅢ. Herodotos doesn"t accept Greek myths uncritically. If he has some reliable grounds for judging of Greek myths, sometimes he denies and sometimes modifies them (as in typeⅠand Ⅱ). On the other hand if he doesn"t have them, he never expresses his own opinions of myths and just narrates them as they are told (as in type Ⅲ). Through analyses of above nice examples, I conclude that Herodotos generally tires to criticize Greek myths as far as possible. That is why he has been called as the father of history and appraised as liberating history from myth. Also, he appears to prefer especially to Eyptian sources in judging Greek myth. Denying or modifying Greek myth, he often relies on Egyptian traditions.
