This study is intended to empirically examine cultural discount that domestically released American movies experience, by focusing on their genres and box-office performance. For this purpose, targeting 217 American films which were in the top hundred of the domestic annual box-office ranking from 2006 to 2010, this study analyzed the influence of each genre on domestic and foreign box-office performance from two dimensions(the box-office distribution of each genre and the box-office profits ratio) to see the discounting effect of each genre. It was found that the influence of each genre on the differences of box-office profits between both countries still remained significant, even after controlling other major box-office factors. American films of comedy and drama genre with a lot of cultural input elements achieved high box-office profits in the American market, whereas earned relatively low profits in Korea. On the contrary to this, American films of action, adventure, SF genre which were based on universal sentiments, recorded box-office profits in America that were similar to those in Korea. These findings demonstrate the influence of each genre on domestic and foreign box-office performance of American movies, and relative discounting effects that domestically released American films experience, based on cultural attributes of each genre.
