The purpose of this study was to analyze play behavior of young children in indoor and outdoor playgrounds and to analyze the differences in their play behavior according to gender. The study observed 80 children under 4 years old in educational institutions in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do province. An observation instrument for young children"s play behavior(Shin, Dong-Joo 1997 Kim, Myung-Jun, 2000), which Frost developed in 1992, was used. The results of the study showed the following: First, there was a difference in play behavior according to the type of playground. Social-cognitive play behavior, such as parallel play and group play, were expressed more in indoor playgrounds. Non-play behaviors, such as conversion behavior and attack behavior, and other play behavior, such as search behavior, gossip, and rude body struggle, were more frequent in outdoor playgrounds. Second, there was a difference in play behavior according to gender. Boys expressed more social-cognitive play behavior: parallel constructive play in indoor playgrounds and games with rules of group play in outdoor playgrounds. To summarize, new forms of children"s playgrounds, adopting the differences of play behavior according to playground types and gender, should be considered in order to raise the quality of playgrounds.
