Abstract

Tef (Eragrostis tef (ZUCC.) TROTTER) ist ein altes, genügsames Getreide, das seit Jahrtausenden in Äthiopien angebaut wird. Der Ertrag von Tef ist nicht gross, seine Körner sind klein und die Pflanze neigt zum Umknicken. In Äthiopien ist Tef eines der Hauptnahrungsmittel, aus dem das traditionelle «Injera» hergestellt wird. Tef ist glutenfrei und soll reich an Aminosäuren und Mineralien, vor allem an Eisen und Kalzium, sein. Es wird in Europa und den USA sowohl über Reformhäuser als auch über das Internet vermarktet und von der äthiopischen Diaspora geschätzt. Um den Tef-Ertrag zu steigern, wird in Äthiopien in Zusammenarbeit mit amerikanischen und europäischen Forschungsinstituten Tef gezüchtet - mit traditionellen Selektionen und Hybridisierung, aber auch mit molekulargenetischer, Marker-unterstützter Züchtung. Tef wird in den USA auch als Futtergras angebaut. Ein «Access and Benefit Sharing»-Abkommen zwischen Äthiopien und einer niederländischen Firma über den Anbau und Vertrieb von Tef-Produkten ist gescheitert. Zudem werden die Probleme, die sich aus dem weltweiten Anbau von Tef und dessen Vermarktung ergeben, diskutiert.
