A sheath heater in a sheathed-type glow plug for diesel engines is described, having at least one generally internal insulation layer and at least one generally external conductive layer, both layers making up a ceramic composite structure. The sheath heater has a generally uniform overall cross-section, generally over its entire length, and, in the area of a tip of the sheath heater, the proportion of the insulation layer in the overall cross-section increases, whereas the proportion of the conductive layer in the overall cross-section decreases.

The sheath heater (1) as recited in claim 1,wherein the cross-section is configured so as to be essentially symmetrical. 3. The sheath heater (1) as recited in claim 1 or2,wherein the insulation layer (3) is essentially surrounded by the conductive layer (2). 4. The sheath heater (1) as recited in one of claims1 through3,wherein the insulation layer (3) is surrounded by the conductive layer (2) in a sandwich-like manner. 5. The sheath heater (1) as recited in one of the preceding claims,wherein it has an overall diameter (d1) in a range of at least roughly 2 mm to 5 mm. 6. The sheath heater (1) as recited in one of the preceding claims,wherein the shape of the conductive layer (2) and of the insulation layer (3) with respect to each other is optimized using a manufacturing process. 7. The sheath heater (1) as recited in claim 6,wherein the optimization is carried out using an analytic method. 8. The sheath heater (1) as recited in claim 7,wherein the analytic method is a finite-element method. 9. The sheath heater (1) as recited in claim 8,wherein the finite-element method is supplemented by a statistical evaluation method (STAU). 10. The sheath heater (1) as recited in one of the preceding claims,wherein it is manufactured using an injection-molding and/or injection-pressing method. 11. The sheath heater (1) as recited in one of the preceding claims,wherein the ceramic composite structure has as constituents tri-silicon tetra nitride and a metallic silicide. 12. The sheath heater (1) as recited in claim 10,wherein the conductive layer (2) is made of 60 wt. % MoSi, 40 wt. % SiN, and sintering additives, and the insulation layer (3) is made of 40 wt. % MoSi, 60 wt. % SiN, and sintering additives. 13. The sheath heater (1) as recited in one of the present claims,wherein the ceramic composite structure is formed on the basis of a SiOC-glass ceramic derived from polysiloxane and having appropriate fillers and a metallic silicide.
