Carboxylic acid acylating agents are derived from polyalkenes such as polybutenes, and a dibasic, carboxylic reactant such as maleic or fumaric acid or certain derivatives thereof. These acylating agents are characterized in that the polyalkenes from which they are derived have a Mn value of about 1
