In the disclosed system, a waste material is burned, the gaseous products of that combustion are cooled, and the cooled gases are then contacted with an alkaline substance of a Periodic Table Group I.A or II.A element in a fluidized bed to scavenge the noxious, corrosive, and/or toxic components in the combustion products.
