A hydraulic pressure actuated power brake system having a hydraulic power booster with operating pressure on both sides of the power piston power wall. The booster is therefore hydraulic pressure suspended so that the hydraulic pump of the system need not be operating to maintain this pressure while the booster is inactive. An accumulator is also charged by this pressure to provide power brake booster operation for several booster actuations without recharging by the pump. When the pump is operating, a pilot valve which is sensitive to a drop in booster operating pressure will control charging or recharging the accumulator and booster from pressure generated by the pump to maintain a desired charge pressure. A pressure relief valve will also prevent overcharging of the accumulator and booster. A check valve prevents loss of booster operating pressure toward the pump outlet if the pump pressure falls below the charged pressure. A spool control valve in the booster modulates pressure on the downstream power piston side, returning fluid to the pump reservoir and creating a controlled pressure differential across the piston power wall to actuate the booster. A mechanical follow-through is provided for manual operation when booster operating pressure is depleted.

A hydraulic pressure suspended power brake booster and controls therefor, comprising: a booster having a housing with a bore therethrough, a power piston reciprocably movable in said housing bore and defining therewith first and second chambers on opposite sides of said piston and also defining an exhaust chamber, a pressure inlet continually communicating with said first chamber and a pressure outlet continually communicating with said exhaust chamber, and means drivable by said piston for actuating a brake system; said booster having a control valve therein, said control valve having a closed center portion which when operated provides fluid communication between said second chamber and said exhaust chamber, said control valve also having an open center portion controlling fluid communication between said first and second chambers; and means for maintaining hydraulic pressure within a predetermined range to said inlet and said first chamber and when said booster is inactive also through said control valve open center portion to said second chamber; said booster being actuated by movement of said control valve to close said control valve open center portion and then open said control valve closed center portion to modulate pressure from said second chamber to said pressure outlet through said exhaust chamber, creating a pressure differential across said piston and actuating said booster; said hydraulic pressure maintaining means including a source of hydraulic pressure having a fluid inlet and a fluid outlet, a check valve between said source fluid outlet and said pressure inlet, said check valve preventing pressure loss should hydraulic pressure from said source be less than pressure at said inlet, and a pilot pressure charging valve sensing pressure at said pressure inlet and controlling the charging of said pressure inlet from said pressure source, said charging valve communicating hydraulic pressure from said source upstream of said check valve with said source fluid inlet when the charging pressure of said pressure inlet reaches a desired value.
