Precision positioning apparatus includes a rotatable driving element connected to a rotatable driven element having a diameter substantially greater than that of the driven element, and rotary movement of the driving element imparts rotary movement to the driven element. The diameters of the two elements are related so that a relatively large movement of the driving element results in a relatively small movement of the driven element, and vice versa.

Positioning apparatus, comprising, in combination: driven means to be positioned, including a drum journaled for rotation and having a plurality of grooves extending circumferentially about the drum; drive means for moving the driven means, including a screw, a plurality of helical threads on the screw, the pitch of which is directly related to the spacing of the grooves on the drum, and means for rotating the screw to position the drum; and means for coupling the screw to the drum, including a cable having two ends secured to the drum and extending in the grooves of the drum and in the threads of the screw for rotating the drum in response to rotation of the screw.
