A solar collector device for collecting and utilizing solar heat in conjunction with a solar heat distribution system comprising an elongated housing having a bottom wall, spaced opposed side walls, and first and second opposed end walls, a first glazing member mounted closing the top portion of the housing and adaptable to transmit solar radiation therethrough, a second glazing member disposed in the housing inwardly of the first glazing member forming an air space therebetween, at least one absorber plate member disposed between the second glazing member and the bottom wall of the housing having inlet and outlet manifolds and passageways therebetween through which a heat transfer medium can flow, system conduit members connected to the inlet and outlet manifolds, an opening in at least one of the end walls for accommodating the system conduit members, first and second closure members attachable respectively to the first and second opposed end walls forming an enclosed space at each respective end of the housing, an air flow opening formed in each of the first and second end walls in position to communicate the air space between the first and second glazing members with the spaces enclosed adjacent to the end walls by the first and second closure members, at least one orifice through each of the closure members communicating the spaces enclosed thereby to ambient atmosphere, and a control member mounted on each of the closure members in position normally closing the respective orifices therein, the control members responding to temperatures in the respective closure members in excess of a predetermined temperature to open the respective orifices to permit air flow therethrough.

A solar collector device comprising an elongated housing structure having a bottom wall, opposed side walls, and first and second end walls, a first glazing member mounted closing the top portion of said housing structure, a second glazing member disposed inwardly of the first glazing member forming an air space therebetween, an absorber member disposed in the housing structure between the second glazing member and the bottom wall, first and second end closure members attached respectively to said first and second end walls, each of said end closure members including means forming an enclosed space adjacent the respective end wall, means associated with the respective end walls communicating the air space between the glazing members with the enclosed spaces formed by the end closure members, and means on each of said end closure members for controllably communicating the enclosed spaces formed by the end closure members to atmosphere to limit the maximum temperature that can occur in the space between the glazing members, said first and second end closure members being movable between a first position wherein said end closure members lie adjacent to the respective end walls and a second position providing access to the respective end walls.
