A membrane type blood oxygenator with a microporous membrane separating blood and air channels, the blood in the blood channels flowing downward to cause any accidentally introduced air bubbles to have an increased residence time in the membrane device owing to buoyancy, the blood being at a pressure sufficiently greater than the air pressure to cause passage of air bubbles through the pores of the microporous membrane to the air side prior to being carried out of the device by flowing blood.

Blood oxygenating apparatus comprising a fluid flow mass transfer device including a microporous membrane sealed to the interior surface of a housing to define a plurality of parallel blood and air channels separated by said membrane, blood inflow and outflow ports communicating with said blood channels, and air inflow and outflow ports communicating with said air channels, said blood inflow port communicating with the upper end of said membrane, said blood outflow port communicating with the lower end of said membrane, a support holding said device with said blood inflow port located above said blood outflow port to cause any air bubbles introduced into said blood inflow port to have, owing to their buoyancy, a velocity through said blood channels that is slower than the bulk flow of blood flowing through said blood channels, means to supply air to said air inflow port at a first pressure, and pumping means to supply blood to said blood inflow port at a pressure sufficiently higher than said first pressure to cause substantially all said bubbles to completely pass through the pores of said microporous membrane to the air side of the membrane prior to being carried to the blood outlet port by the flow of blood. 2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said membrane is pleated to define alternate said blood and air channels, each said channel being defined by adjacent, generally parallel membrane folds. 3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said support holds said device so that said blood and air channels are vertically positioned. 4. The apparatus of claim 1, 2 or 3 further comprising fluid transmissive spacer material within said blood channels to aid in detaining said bubbles. 5. A method of oxygenating blood comprising providing a fluid flow mass transfer device including a microporous membrane sealed to the interior surface of a housing to define a plurality of parallel blood and air channels separated by said membrane, blood inflow and outflow ports communicating with said blood channels, and air inflow and outflow ports communicating with said air channels, said blood inflow port communicating with the upper end of said membrane, said blood outflow port communicating with the lower end of said membrane, supporting said device with said blood inflow port located above said blood outflow port to cause and air bubbles introduced into said blood inflow port to have, owing to buoyancy, a velocity through said blood channels that is slower than the bulk flow of blood flowing through said channels, supplying air to said air inlet port at a first pressure, and pumping blood to said blood inlet port at a pressure sufficiently higher than said first pressure to cause substantially all said bubbles to completely pass through the pores of said microporous membrane to the air side of the membrane prior to being carried to the blood outflow port by the flow of blood. 6. The method of claim 5 wherein said membrane is pleated to define alternate said blood and air channels, each said channel being defined by adjacent, generally parallel membrane folds. 7. The method of claim 6 wherein said device is supported so that said blood and air channels are vertically disposed. 8. The method of claim 5, 6 or 7 wherein fluid transmissive spacer material is provided within said blood channels to aid in detaining said bubbles.
