A continuous process for the production of alkyl esters from carboxylic acids wherein an aqueous stream containing a first carboxylic acid, RCO2H, is contacted with an organic stream comprising a carboxylic acid ester, R″CO2R′, so that the organic stream is enriched with RCO2H. The RCO2H enriched organic stream is separated from the aqueous stream and is contacted with a catalyst to obtain a second carboxylic acid, R″CO2H, and a product carboxylic acid ester, RCO2R′. The product ester, RCO2R′, is separated from the second acid, R″CO2H, the reactant ester, R″CO2R′, and the first acid, RCO2H, and the second acid, R″CO2H, is esterified to obtain the reactant ester, R″CO2R′, which is recycled to the initial part of the process. In this process R is aliphatic or aromatic, R′is alkyl and R″is aliphatic with at least about 4 carbon atoms. When the reactant ester is a bifunctional polymer having both sulfonic acid and R′carboxylic acid ester pendant functional groups, this process may be performed in the absence of a catalyst.

A continuous process for the production of alkyl esters from carboxylic acids comprising: (a) contacting an aqueous stream containing a first carboxylic acid, RCO2H, with an organic stream comprising a reactant carboxylic acid ester, R″CO2R′, so that the organic stream is enriched with RCO2H; (b) separating the aqueous stream from the RCO2H enriched organic stream; (c) contacting the organic stream of (b) with a catalyst to obtain a product carboxylic acid ester, RCO2R′, and a second carboxylic acid, R″CO2H; (d) separating the product ester, RCO2R′, from the second carboxylic acid, R″CO2H; (e) esterifying the second carboxylic acid of (d), R″CO2H, to obtain the reactant ester, R″CO2R′; and (f) recycling the reactant ester, R″CO2R′, of (e) to (a); wherein R is aliphatic or aromatic, R′is alkyl, and R″is aromatic or aliphatic with at least about 4 carbon atoms.
