A method for determining the position of a valve comprises locating a radioactive source proximally of a valve and monitoring radiation from the source with a detector therefor located proximally of an external surface of the valve, the relative position and alignment of the source and detector being so chosen that the count rate detected by the detector is indicative of the position of the valve.
