Gas permselective membranes having a high selectivity and high flux are prepared by plasma polymerizing a coating onto the surface of a microporous membrane substrate. Two types of coatings are disclosed. Gas separatory modules utilize the novel membranes in the form of hollow fibers.

A method for separating gases comprising: positioning a gas permselective hollow fiber membrane having an O2/N2 gas permselectivity of at least about 2.3 in a suitable gas separatory apparatus, wherein said membrane comprises a microporous hollow fiber substrate, and a gas permselective plasma polymerizate coating on the surface of the substrate, wherein the plasma polymerizate coating is formed from a lower alkyl substituted disiloxane monomer of molecular weight of not more than 165 according to the formula: [Figure] wherein R1, R2, R3 and R4 are individually selected from methyl and ethyl, and contacting a gaseous mixture with said membrane in order to effect the required separation. A gas permselective hollow fiber membrane having an O2/N2 gas permselectivity of greater than 2.3 comprising: a microporous hollow fiber substrate; and a gas permselective plasma polymerizate coating on the surface of the substrate, wherein the plasma polymerizate coating is formed from a lower alkyl substituted disiloxane monomer of molecular weight of not more than 165 according to the formula: [Figure] wherein R1, R2, R3, and R4 are individually selected from methyl and ethyl.
